Guided tours of our museum’s exhibition rooms are complemented with educational activities, tailored to different age groups
The museum offers a variety of organised educational and recreational activities. Teachers, families, and individuals keen on exploration can choose from a diverse range of activities tailored to different school levels, subjects, and specific interests. These activities take place in both museum rooms and the educational workshop, which has been active since 16 May 2008 to offer schools guided tours integrated with some group activities and exercises aimed at the direct observation and manipulation of materials and artefacts with the help of technical and scientific supports.
For school groups, there is no specific limit on the number of pupils/students, but each group typically consists of a school class.

A day as palaeontologists
This educational activity is designed to introduce young children to the captivating world of palaeontology. Participants will learn about fossils, how they are formed, and the work of palaeontologists. Engaging games will help children memorise complex terms.
What do we know about life millions of years ago? What incredible animals lived in the seas that covered the Earth? Let’s explore together: trilobites and ammonites await you!
In the first part, we will delve into theoretical concepts to uncover fossils and explore the basics of palaeontology. Then, in the second part, we will analyse specimens under the microscope and enjoy an entertaining simulation of a palaeontological excavation. The stars of the show will be the animals that defined various geological eras, allowing you to experience life as a palaeontologist for a day!

Fossils and the history of life
GPupils and students take centre stage as they engage in hands-on activities that deepen their understanding of palaeontology whilst having fun. Developing a critical mindset, acquiring approaches to the discipline, and appreciating the historical dimension of life.
Embark on a journey through prehistory, designed as a cohesive exploration leading children through the stages of our planet’s history, from its origin to the Homo genus and its diverse cultures spanning the Palaeolithic to the Metal Age. Theoretical sessions are alternated with areas dedicated to hands-on experimentation, including demonstrations of flint knapping and fire-making.
Engage in a sensory game to recognise the various materials used by prehistoric people in their daily life.
Travelling back to prehistoric times
Experience the art of lighting fires with flint and pyrite
Natural geometries
Embark on a journey of discovery into the captivating world of rocks and minerals.
Acquire the knowledge necessary to recognise the most common mineral species through their physical properties and the observation of models of crystal structures. Explore the practical applications of minerals in everyday life.
Experimental workshop on the physical and chemical properties of minerals and rocks: engage in hands-on exploration and observation of samples to appreciate the diverse shapes and colours that define this fascinating world. Participate in interactive games such as “mineral hunt”.
Gain insights into recognizing rocks based on their morphology and stratigraphy, unveiling the history of the Earth. Follow a unit-based route to comprehend the historical use of minerals by humans.
Treasure hunt
Discover the museum in a unique way as students, divided into teams, search through the exhibition rooms for specified finds based on clues provided, following a map.
Fossils: bridging myths and legends
Fossils have long captivated humanity, with centuries of folklore attributing mysterious and divine origins to them. Folk traditions abound with tales featuring fossils.

Excursions and environmental educational activities
In addition to visiting the museum, guided excursions are available to explore protected natural areas such as Monte San Vicino and Canfaito Nature Reserve, Valle dell’Elce, Valle dei Grilli, Springs of the River Esino, and more.
Arrivals and visits
Arrivals are scheduled every hour starting at 9:30 a.m. and must be arranged in advance with the Museum’s ticket office.
Please arrive at the ticket office 15 minutes before the agreed start time. You must show a document specifying the number of pupils/students present on the school’s HEADED PAPER, where the Headmaster has indicated if there are any pupils/students using Law 104 (they enter free of charge, so their number will be deducted from the total number present). For privacy reasons, we can no longer accept lists of pupils/students with first and last names. Please only indicate the total number of pupils/students and those with Law 104. A simple declaration from the accompanying teachers will NOT be enough for this purpose
The visit is coordinated by the Museum’s ticket office, which will take into account what has been agreed with the teacher of reference.
In case of cancellation please send an email to fondazioneoppelide@gmail.com specifying the day of the visit and the name of the school. Any changes to bookings (number of pupils/students, times, activities) must be agreed at least 15 days before the date of the visit with the Museum’s ticket office.
